Seeded 7th/8th heading into last Saturday’s Cross Country Sectional at Angel Mounds, the Mt. Vernon boys cross country team finally closed the first to fifth gap to 62 seconds to finish 6th. They were edged by Evansville Central by 12 points just missing out of the top 5 team finish which advances an entire team to the Regional tournament. Overall, due to the windy conditions, times were slow, but the “pack mentality” was nearly enough to qualify as a team.
Once again, leading the ‘Cats was Senior, Johnathan West who placed 19th overall. Sam Campbell was 23rd, Caleb Oakman was 35th, Tommy Kelley was 40th and Danner Latshaw ran a personal best in his 5th place finish breaking the 19 minute mark for the first time.
Once the top 5 teams have all of their runners pulled from the finish list, the top 10 individuals are then selected to advance as individual participants to the IHSAA Regional. Both Johnathan West and Sam Campbell placed in the top 10 individually to advance. Campbell, however, has a conflict with Marching Band, so the next individual advances in his place. An Evansville Harrison runner was next on the list, but he also had a conflict and so Mt. Vernon will send Caleb Oakman to the Regional competition to represent the ‘Cats.
On the girls’ side, Emma Thompson, Taylor Collins and Summer Sanders all advance individually making a total of 5 MV runners who will represent the Wildcat’s next weekend in Petersburg. The boys are scheduled to run at 10 am while the girls race starts at 10:45 am. Good Luck ‘Cats!
