Despite the driving rain and a soggy course, the Mt.Vernon Boys Cross Country team finished 3rd at the Mater Dei Invite. Castle won the team title while Mater Dei’s Tanner Schickel was the overall winner covering the course in 16:50.8, nearly 10 seconds slower than his previous time due to course conditions. Mater Dei finished second, while Reitz was 4th and Evansville Christian was 5th. North Posey and Bosse each had runners, but not enough for team scores.
Mt. Vernon was led by Tommy Kelley who completed the course in 18:22.3 which earned him a 5th place ribbon. This was actually 10 seconds faster for him than a couple of weeks ago. Following him the whole race and pushing him at the finish line was Braden Dike. Braden crossed the line in 6th place, less than one second behind him (18:23.10). This was his first race at Angel Mounds as a high school runner.
Running third for Mt. Vernon and placing 14th overall was Danner Latshaw. Danner’s time was not as fast as it was at Gibson Southern a week ago, but it was 45 seconds faster than his first outing at Angel Mounds.
