The girls varsity cross country team was named Sectional Champions for the 2019 season this Saturday morning!!! The 7 girls ran at the Angel Mounds course in Newburgh and were able to defeat the reigning champions Memorial High School 42-49.
“The girls went into the race naturally nervous, but after their Conference win last week this seemed to give them the confidence they needed to know that they could reach their goals even further and go for an additional win this year at Sectionals” said Coach Ashton Wagner.
The Sectional meet scores the top five runners from each team and those top five teams are then ranked to move on and qualify for the Regional meet next week in Petersburg, Indiana at Prides Creek State Park.
The top five girls for Mt.Vernon were Kori Leverenz in 3rd place with a time of 19:48, Kaden Leverenz coming in at 4th place in 19:57, 5th place was Sophie Kloppenburg with a time of 20:06, Jr., Emma Thompson was 15th at 21:40, and senior, Taylor Collins was 21st with a time of 22:05. “These five gave it their all during the race and showed that hard work and believing that they could win really pays off.”

“As their coach, I could not be more proud of this team of girls. They continue to amaze me with what they can accomplish and I’m ready to watch them keep the excitement going for the weeks to come at Regionals and beyond. Their sense of teamwork and support for each other is truly one of a kind to come by.” Great job Wildcats!! We are so proud of your Sectional Championship title!!! #AllIn #WeareMV
