Mount Vernon Girls Tennis returned to their winning ways on Wednesday after struggling against tough competition earlier in the week. Mount Vernon’s #1 doubles team of Cora Epley & Leah Bilskie made quick work of Central’s Donnovan & Sills (6-1, 6-1) behind Bilskie’s thudding forehand and a crushing first-serve from Epley. #2 doubles Janell Schirtzinger & Bryley Harms were off the court shortly after, dispatching Central’s J. Layne & E. Degehnhart 6-2, 6-1. Harms’ down-the-line backhand was nearly unanswerable and Schirtzinger smashed anything near the net for a clean winner. Mount Vernon’s #2 singles Lauren Boeke and #3 singles Maggie Jones both fell to tenacious players in Central’s Madison Martens (3-6, 4-6) and Annabelle Owen (1-6, 2-6), respectively. At 2-2, the match would be decided by the #1 singles match-up between Mount Vernon’s Morgan Woods and Central’s Morgan McWilliams. Woods cruised through the first set 6-2, settling into a rhythm where seemingly every shot found its target. The second set proved more difficult with McWilliams raising her game midway through, erasing Woods’ lead. Woods would fight back, painting lines with solid ground strokes and eventually securing the win for Mount Vernon 7-5 in the second.
