Mt. Vernon ran with only 4 guys today at the Ev. Mater Dei Sectional at Angel Mounds, but two of the 4 advance to next week’s Regional Action in Petersburg! Mt. Vernon was led by Junior Tommy Kelley, 13th overall, by way of an 18:15.52. Not far behind him was Sophomore running mate Braden Dike, 17th overall (18:44.71). Both of these guys will put it all on the line again next weekend as they will work to remain in the top 10 unattached runners to qualify for the IHSAA Semi-state.
Also running for Mt. Vernon today was Senior Braden Henning and Sophomore Seth DeWar. Braden gambled in an aggressive first mile as he knew he had to go for it. Unfortunately, due to the heat, it was a tough day and a tough race as Braden finishes out his Cross Country career. We will miss him and we are grateful to him for joining us these past 2 years. Seth also battled in the heat today and a fast start to this varsity race. Seth plans to continue training this winter prior to the track season and we’re confident this will help him next fall.
Two additional Seniors saw their Cross Country careers come to an end today: Danner Latshaw and Mitchell Wilson. Danner was forced out due to injury and Mitchell, who has run with him since the 6th grade, walked the course with him. It was a fitting end to the leadership these guys have shown. Our younger guys will have to step up in a big way to fill their shoes as team leaders going forward.
As is tradition, all MVXC guys will continue to train with Tommy and Braden to help push them as far as they can go this season. It has been a good one thus far and we’re excited to see just how far these guys can advance in the post-season. Congrats guys – but don’t settle! Keep up the hard work! #WeAreMVXC!
